Calling all you 90’s trendsetters: Remember when your whole life seemed to revolve around taking care of an egg-shaped, keychain-sized, plastic Tamagotchi virtual pet? If so, you’re in luck! Bandai, the company behind the digital companions, recently reintroduced the classic Tamagotchi virtual pet as a free app for iPhones and Androids alike (cue the screams of excitement). If not, you can still easily fall in love with this simple yet highly addictive game.
The Tamagotchi took the Western world by storm when it was introduced to U.S. markets in 1997. Soon, both parents and kids would be up all hours of the night pushing buttons on their keychains to make sure their Tamagotchi characters were fed, played with, and put to bed on time. In case you don’t remember, the creature on your Tamagotchi console develops through several stages of growth (i.e., baby, child, teen, and adult) and progresses differently depending on the level of care you provide. According to the Tamagotchi L.I.F.E website, over 79 million Tamagotchi gadgets were sold worldwide. That, my friends, is a LOT of virtual tender love and care.
Though you can’t attach the app to the monkey zipper on your Kipling backpack, it’s still pretty stellar. The graphics are decked out in full color and it features even more characters than the original handheld game. Under the name Tamagotchi L.I.F.E., you can relive all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into caring for your virtual BFF back in the 90’s. Having a real pet can be laborious and rather expensive. Why not spend your valuable time and energy feeding and caring for a fake one?
Warning: May cause you to completely disregard work and/or other important, real-life things.
