Apple pie, applesauce, fresh and crisp apples, fresh apple crisp, candy apples, and apple candy… October is here and it’s officially National Apple Month. Can you believe it’s already October? Autumn is in full effect and one of our favorite Fall family activities is apple picking. If you’re looking for fun places to go with kids, look no further than the apple orchard. To celebrate this awesome seasonal activity we wanted to share with you our favorite PYO (pick your own!) and U-Pick orchards across the country. Worry not. If these orchards are out of your reach, check this handy orchard directory to find one near you!
At Aamodt’s Apple Farm in Stillwater, MN you can pick delicious apples, pet the goats in the goat farm, get lost in the hay bale maze, and take a bumpy, bouncy ride through the orchard all in the same place. They even have some kids-only activities like the tractor-pulled kiddie train and the John Deere Kiddie Trike and Tractor Farm.
October varieties include: Minnesota Honey Crisp, Fireside, Connell Red Fireside, Haralson, Regent, and Keepsake.
We would be remiss if we didn’t include an orchard from the state that produces over half of the contries apples. Beyond the standard orchard activities, The Farm At Swan’s Trail has live duck races, a putting course, a pig show, and a 45-acre pumpkin patch for the discerning Halloween decorator.

Check out the ponds and the herb and rose gardens, hop on a hay ride, and catch live music and puppet shows all in one place. Oh yeah, you can also pick apples! Just pay a nominal cost for a picking bag and pay only for what you take away in the bag. Anything you eat on Applewood Orchards is free!

As the picture shows on the right shows, at Sky Top Orchard you can pick apples, check out the working bee hive, visit the barnyard animals, and have a picnic, all while enjoying the panoramic mountain views. Tractor-pulled hayrides for the whole crew and wagon rides for the little ones are also enjoyed daily.
October varieties include: Staymen, Granny Smith, Cameo, Rome, Pink Lady, Arkansas Black, and Gold Rush.
This CERTIFIED ORGANIC orchard in Mass is home to organic Apples, Hard Ciders, Sweet Cider, Vinegar, Jams and Jellies, Baked Goods, and Maple Syrup. Take in the scenic views, pick yourself some organically grown apples, and don’t forget to take home one or more of the five varieties of hard cider “from a farm, not a factory”.
